We join with those who mourn
the loss of life, the injuries, and the disruption of lives caused
by the attacks against Washington, DC, and New York,
N.Y. All those effected -- the brave people who helped
in rescue efforts, those involved in America's response to terror and in
the war with Iraq-- are in our thoughts and prayers.

Halloween is a cherished tradition for all children. But this
late fall celebration involves a variety of risks for too trusting kids.
Here are some tips from the Santa Maria (CA) Fire Department make it safer.
Young children
should always go trick-or-treating with an adult.
Never trick-or-treat
alone. Have at least two buddies go with you.
Plan the entire
route and make sure your family knows what it is.
Make sure that
kids have a flame-retardant costume.
Wait until you
get home and your parents check your candy before you eat it.
Be very cautious
of strangers.
Accept treats only
in the doorway. Never go inside a house or apartment.
Do not play near
lit jack-o-lanterns.
Visit only houses
where the lights are on.
Walk, don’t run.
Walk on sidewalks
and driveways.
Cross the street
at the corner or in a crosswalk.
Wear a watch and
carry a flashlight. Take a cellular phone if possible.
Always use common
sense.
Be sure to say
thank you for your treats.
