Holiday Safety Tips
Law abiding citizens aren’t the only ones looking for a few extra
dollars to cover holiday presents. So are the pickpockets, thieves, and
burglars.
Here are some tips to help you and your family stay safe this
holiday season. They come from the Santa Maria (CA) Police Department
and the National Crime Prevention Council.
Out & About
- Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things,
stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check
or credit card when possible.
- Never overburden yourself with packages. This helps discourage purse
snatchers.
- Park in a well-lighted space. Lock you car and close the windows,
even if you are only going to be gone for a few minutes. Lock packages
out of sight in the trunk.
- Don’t put packages in the trunk and return for more shopping – a
thief may see you. Either put the packages in the trunk at the end
of your shopping, or move the car to another parking place.
- Wait for public transportation or rides from friends in busy, well-lit
places.
- Teach your children to go to a store clerk and ask for help if you
become separated in a shopping mall. They should never go into the
parking lot alone.
- Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse under your
arm. Keep a wallet in an inside pocket.
At Home
- Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts or go door
to door seeking charitable contributions when there is no charity involved.
Ask for ID and find out how funds will be use. If you aren’t satisfied,
don’t give. Instead, give to your church, the United Way, or
a charitable organization you already know and like.
- Lock your doors and windows, even if you will only be away from a
few minutes. Give the impression that your house or apartment is occupied
by leaving on lights and a radio or TV. If you live where it may
snow, make arrangements to have your sidewalks/driveways cleared.
- Do not display gifts – especially large or expensive ones – where
they can be seen from a window or doorway.
- Use an automatic timer for your lights if you are not home for the
holidays. Have a neighbor watch your house or apartment, and collect
your mail and newspapers.
Your Neighborhood
- Help keep the holidays safe and happy fir everyone. Share these tips
with your neighbors.
- When going to a party, know your safe limit. Remember, only time
eliminates alcohol from your body. Choose a designated driver. Don’t
drink and drive.
- If you host a party, have non-alcoholic drinks available for party
guests. Use a jigger when serving alcoholic beverages rather than pouring
straight from the bottle.
- If you have a Neighborhood Watch group, get them together and go
caroling. Don’t forget the elderly and other people who might
be especially lonely during the holidays.
